Royal Kona Resort Appoints New Executive Chef George Gomes

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii  (June 24, 2019) – Royal Kona Resort has appointed George Gomes Jr. as its new executive chef. Drawing upon over three decades of culinary experience, Chef Gomes will oversee all culinary aspects of the resort including tiki-inspired Don the Beachcomber Restaurant and Don’s Mai Tai Bar, home of the world’s best mai tai.

“Chef Gomes is extremely talented with an impressive culinary background that will elevate the Kona dining scene for hotel guests and local residents alike,” said Tom Bell, president of Hawaiian Hotels and Resorts. “We are excited to welcome Chef Gomes to the Royal Kona Resort.”

The past three decades have marked an impressive career trajectory for the Hawaii native. Chef Gomes graduated from the Hawaii Community College Culinary Program and started his culinary journey at luxury resorts along the Kohala Coast. He worked his way up the ranks to executive chef at fine dining establishments throughout the state including A Pacific Café on Kauai, Merriman’s Restaurant on Maui, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on Hawaii Island and corporate executive chef of Tri-Star Restaurant Group, where he took the helm of five restaurants on multiple islands. In his most recent position, Chef Gomes was executive chef of the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort on Hawaii Island.

The Governor of Hawaii mandated that as of Thursday March 26th, all new arrivals into Hawaii are required to complete a 14-day quarantine. “Stay in Place” policies have also been issued for some islands requiring all non-essential services to be closed. The health and safety of our guests and employees is paramount. We understand that collective action is needed to slow the progression of COVID-19, and because of this, we are joining many other hotels and businesses in temporarily closing the Hawaiian Hotels & Resorts Properties effective March 25, 2020.

We are currently scheduled to re-open on May 1, 2020 and are honoring existing bookings and accepting new reservations for travel from that date onward. We are closely monitoring the situation which has been changing rapidly and will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so, following guidance from the CDC, Hawaii Department of Health and state and local officials.

We will be waiving all fees for any guest reservations that include travel from March 15, 2020 thru December 20, 2020 that need to be cancelled or changed.
